Do you think the Environment Agency have a role to play in policing Waste Management?
Waste and recycling
The past year has seen significant changes to recycling legislation and the role the Environment Agency plays in it's implementation. Gone are the days of licensing for waste management sites, to be replaced by a Permitting system (standard and bespoke). Waste managers now have to complete an NVQ level 4 and waste treatment facilities are audited quarterly. Waste carriers are subject to stricter guidelines, with road side stops being a frequent occurance for unmarked vans carrying waste. Fly tipping is being tackled head on, as is the illegal export of waste. In effect, over the next few years, the cowboy will be driven from the UK, leaving a waste management industry with a clean bill of health!
Oh how wrong was I
So, it looks like I was off the mark by quite a bit. Metal thefts are on the rise and people are loosing their telephone connections simply because copper cables are being stolen and fenced by Scrap yards. Trains are running late because signalling cables are being stolen. As a leading IT Disposal company in the UK, we're pretty damn embarressed by the actions of people in the fringes of the recycling industry
